Monterey Sports Car Championship draws thousands to Laguna Seca
The Monterey Sports Car Championship concluded Sunday at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, drawing thousands of tourists from around the world and boosting local tourism in Monterey County. “We bring in people from all across the country, so it really does drive tourism, they stay in the hotels, they rent the cars, they stay in the restaurants, so it is a big economic benefit of our county.” Laurie Eberhart, CEO of Friends at Laguna Seca, said, “Over the course of the weekend, we’ll expect about 30,000 people that are coming out.”Mel Harder, president and GM for the WeatherTech Raceway, said, “It’s a fan favorite and people enjoy to come out here and have a good time at the track and away from the track.”Spectators traveled from far and wide to attend the event. Riley Odean, an attendee, shared, “My grandfather, who just passed, used to bring his Corvette out and used to take the laps for the Corvettes.” Another attendee, Alex Tonner, mentioned, “I’m out here because, as she said, my boyfriend works for AO racing and he’s an engineer, so I get to have company for what I usually end up hanging out by myself.” A regular visitor added, “I’ve been here just about every year for the last few years. I come out here with my dad typically, we’re big race fans.”The next major events at Laguna Seca are scheduled for July, featuring the MotoAmerica Superbike Speedfest and the IndyCar Grand Prix of Monterey.
