The second Eurovision semi-final is about to kick off with Greece amongst the remaining countries battling it out for a place in Saturday’s grand final. Prior to the 2025 contest, Greece had participated in show 44 times since its debut in 1974.

The nation has won the contest once so far, with the song My Number One performed by Helena Paparizou in 2005. The 2025 artist Klavdia reached the final of The Voice of Greece, where she was mentored by Eurovision winner Paparizou.

Klavdia went on to release platinum-selling singles like Haramata and Vasanizomai, which helped her win Best Newcomer at the Super Music Awards in Cyprus in 2023. At just 22 years old, she has already appeared on stage alongside some huge names.

Her Eurovision song title, Asteromata, translates to ‘Starry-eyed’ and includes lyrics such as: “My sweet mother, do not weep. Though they dress you in mourning black, This faded, weary body of mine.

“No flame can ever crack, The swallows born of fire’s embrace.” Her song is described as “an ethnic ballad that addresses separation in every possible form.”

The description continues: “From what we love, from our childhood, from a place we left behind… It’s open to interpretation but, in its essence, it shares a message of hope and resilience.”

Although she did not write the song herself, she said it was easy to connect to “on a personal level”, calling it “her little baby”.

She told Eurovision: “The lyrics were ready since last year. They were in some drawer just sitting and waiting to be used.

“I did the melody in some parts. In the verses, to be exact. And I totally feel like this song is my little baby.”

“I literally went with the flow. I read the lyrics and the melody came by, it was very natural.

“In fact, all about this song was natural and we were all on the same page.”

She explained how she has had plenty of messages from fans saying they were touched by the song.

The lyrics continue: “My sweet mother, do not weep. My life’s a vessel, drifting free. Forever searching for its home. The wind, its sail at sea.”

The star had already attempted to represent Greece at Eurovision in 2023, but was unsuccessful the first time around.

“Back then the process was different. We didn’t have a national selection contest,” she explained.

The second Eurovision semi-final will air on BBC One on May 15 at 8pm. Those watching outside of the UK can tune in via the official Eurovision Song Contest YouTube channel.
