ST. MARTIN, Miss. (WLOX) – Therapy can come in all forms. At Myhres School of Music in St. Martin, it can be both creative and fun.

Michael Myhres is a teacher at the school along with his wife, Cecilia. The two found each other through music. They believe the effect that music has on one’s mental health is often overlooked.

“If you’re upset, it can make you happy,” explained Michael. “If you’re wound up from teaching all day or going to school all day, sit down and play a couple of chords on your guitar. It’s like magic. It can affect your brain and the way you think. I don’t need a doctor or scientist to tell me that. I see it every day.”

For Cecilia, it’s a blessing to see how much of an impact music can have on those learning an instrument for the first time, granting them a new emotional outlet.

“You see children who come in here and can’t even look you in the eye,” she described. “Their confidence is low… It’s such a blessing to see how children are affected and learn expression, because sometimes during their teenage years, that’s all they have.”

The couple believes music has helped them through challenging times during their own marriage. They want to help those who need an outlet — even those who have no musical experience.

“What I always tell people, including adults, is ‘I will never give up on you unless you give up on you.’ It is Mental Health Awareness Month, and I just want to give hope for people to do something.”
