Former Olympic champion Robert Johansson has retired, two and half months after a suit manipulation scandal rocked his Norwegian team.

He was suspended for the rest of the season at the Nordic skiing world championships on home snow in Trondheim after his team illegally made suits more stable in a bid to gain extra metres in the jump.

“It’s stupid not to be able to end the season and my career as usual,” Johansson told Norwegian broadcaster TV2 on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old won gold with the Norwegian team at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and at the ski-flying world championships in Oberstdorf in 2018 and Planica in 2020.
