The Macedonian Electricity Market Operator (MEMO) has issued the first Guarantees of Origin for electricity produced from renewable sources to ESM, the national electricity production company, for power generated by its hydroelectric facilities.

A significant reform

The Minister of Energy, Sanja Božinovska, presented the certificate to the General Director of ESM, Lazo Uzunchev, stating: “This is a significant reform – congratulations to the leadership of ESM for their efforts in producing clean, renewable energy, despite the challenges and inherited issues they face daily.”

The Guarantees of Origin system is implemented in cooperation with Grexel, a leading European company in this field. A Guarantee of Origin is an electronic document that provides consumers with clear proof that a certain portion of the electricity they use is generated from renewable sources.

To ensure full recognition within the European market

“Many companies are already in the process of joining the Register of Guarantees of Origin, and as a responsible operator, we are actively working on issuing, recording, and recognising them. This is a significant step toward greater transparency and trust in the origin of electricity,” said the CEO of MEMO, Zoran Gjorgjievski.

The Rules for Administering the Guarantees of Origin, adopted by MEMO, are aligned with the Energy Law, the Decree on Guarantees of Origin, and the standards of the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB). These rules are also harmonised with the principles of the European Energy Certificate System (EECS) and, together with MEMO’s efforts to become a full member of AIB, will ensure full recognition within the European market.
