Don’t trust just anyone to pave or repair your driveway.

The Better Business Bureau has received several reports of scammers ripping off homeowners by using some convincing tactics.

The BBB recommends the following tips to avoid someone becoming a victim:

    • Always be wary of contractors who go door-to-door.
    • Research companies and contractors before you hire
    • Get everything in writing
    • Stagger the payments
    • Pay with a credit card
    • Be sure to read the fine print in every contract

“The company will claim to be doing a job down the road and say they notice how you might need repairs on your driveway, because they’re in the neighborhood and have some extra materials. They’ll claim they can give you a discounted price and do a great job for you. Unfortunately, that’s what we’ve found leads into many paving scams,” said BBB President and CEO Michele Mason.

You can always check the Better Business Bureau’s website to see if a contractor is legitimate.
