One of the brightest jewels of the Spanish alternative panorama, a band with many influences of Tame Impala (in terms of sound, is the band with which they compare them most) and Radiohead.
The name comes from a character from the Marx brothers, and have been building a sound universe almost two decades, with very good letters and incredible evolution.
Who are Rufus T. Firefly?
The band is formed in Aranjuez (Madrid) in 2006, and is a project led by Víctor Cabezuelo (voice, guitar, keyboards) and Julia Martín-Maestro (drums), with different musicians who have been entering and leaving the group over time.
His is psychedelic rock, art rock, atmospheric pop … and, above all, the ability to excite.
What makes them special?
Rufus is not an easy chorch band. His songs are trips: sound layers, introspective lyrics and careful production until the last detail. With their influences and sound changes, they have managed to find their own voice within the indie in Spanish.
Discography:
Before “Magnolia”:
- Rufus T. Firefly (2008) – His first homonymous album, even with one foot in the more conventional indie rock.
- My Synthetic Heart (2012) – in English, with electronic dyes and more experimentation.
- Nine (2014) – The album in which they settle in Spanish and its current identity is approaching. More mature, more atmospheric.
Maturity and consolidation stage:
- Magnolia (2017) – Masterpiece of Spanish psychedelic rock. Poetic, deep, and emotionally expansive.
- Loto (2018) – Direct continuation of Magnolia, more sophisticated and with more electronic weight.
- Long tomorrow (2021) – Disc with cinematographic soul, full of light, strings and orchestral arrangements.
-
All good things (2025) – an even more introspective and personal return, which mixes influences of Radiohead, Nirvana and Oasis. It was presented in concerts with wireless helmets for an immersive and emotional experience without distractions. A proposal as risky as honest.
Why should you listen to them?
Because they make art with each note. Because in a musical panorama full of haste, Rufus T. Firefly takes the time to build something that really transports you. And because few bands get so sincere, so elegant and so emotional at the same time.
