The Italian National Day, organised by the Italian Embassy in Georgia, was celebrated this year on 3 June at Funicular, one of the most prestigious restaurants in the Georgian capital with a breathtaking view of the city.
In the presence of numerous representatives of Georgian society, the diplomatic corps and the Italian community in the country, Ambassador Massimiliano D’Antuono emphasised in his speech the strong ties that unite Italy and Georgia.
“The ties between Italy and Georgia, between our two peoples, are deep. Witness to this is the strong contribution, amounting to around USD 600 million in 2024, or just under 2% of Georgian GDP, made by the Georgian community in Italy for the benefit of their country. Cooperation in the field of culture and education is also excellent, as witnessed by the launch of the Faculties of Medicine and Design at the International University of Kutaisi together with the University of Naples ‘Federico II’. From a commercial point of view, in 2024 Italy was confirmed as Georgia’s second largest trading partner in Europe and eleventh largest globally. On a political level, Italy and Georgia are united by a long-standing friendship, which remains stable even in the current global and regional context, marked by numerous sources of instability and tension,” the Ambassador said in his welcome address. “Within this framework, as friends, we continue to strongly support the need to maintain a frank and constructive dialogue with Georgia, both bilaterally and within the framework of the European Union and NATO. As recently reiterated by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edmondo Cirielli, we hope that Georgia will soon give a new impetus to its European path, in adherence to the fundamental values and principles of the European Union.”
The crowded Italian Republic Day offered guests a true kaleidoscope of beauty and Italian excellence: national anthems sung by the female folk ensemble ‘Gumbati’; musical pieces performed by two famous Italian accordionists, known and loved by the Georgian public, Sara Calvanelli and Simone Zanchini; a showcase of the splendid objects of Italian design, from pieces of furniture to Alfa Romeo cars, the Italian pride of the automotive industry; Italian food and wine excellences, from Prosecco, Aperol and Campari to salami and mozzarella, from the best Italian wines to culinary delicacies brought directly from Italy to delight the guests’ palates. The event was made possible thanks to the support of numerous sponsors and partners.
