Tom Felton still loves Harry Potter.
The actor, who played Draco Malfoy in the beloved series, addressed Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling‘s controversial comments about the transgender community ahead of reprising his role in Broadway’s Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.
While speaking with Variety on the red carpet at the 2025 Tony Awards on Sunday, June 8, Felton was asked if the controversy around the author’s views affects his work.
“No, I can’t say it does,” he said. “I’m not really that attuned to it…I have not seen anything bring the world together more than [Harry] Potter. She’s responsible for that, so I’m incredibly grateful.”
“The only thing I always remind myself is that I’ve been lucky enough to travel the world. Here I am in New York,” he added.
Felton is set to make his Broadway debut in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at the Lyric Theatre in New York City. His limited run will start on November 11 for 19 weeks.
Felton, who last played Draco in 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, told Variety he looks forward to returning to his iconic role.
“I think we all thought the wizarding world would slowly… that the fandom flame might douse over the years, but clearly it’s not,” he said.
Rowling first came under fire in June 2020 when she appeared to support anti-transgender sentiments in a series of tweets, and has since made repeated comments about the transgender community. Multiple actors from the Harry Potter franchise have spoken out against the author, including Daniel Radcliffe who told The Atlantic that her comments have made him feel “really sad.”
Despite this, Felton told People Magazine on the Tony’s red carpet that he’s received plenty of support from Radcliffe as he prepares for his Broadway debut.
“My old school chum, Potter, Radcliffe, has done quite a bit of Broadway, so he’s holding my hand and certainly helping me through all the things that are hard to learn,” he said. “But from what I gather, it’s an amazing community of people. The fans are really, really gracious and excited. So I’m just thrilled to be part of it.”
