Kosovo is gradually becoming a destination country for foreign workers, says MUP

The Ministry of Internal Affairs held today the next dialogue in the field of migration between Kosovo, Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
The Kosovo delegation in this dialogue was led by the Secretary General of Internal Affairs, Fahrije Ternava-Sheremeti, while the Swiss delegation was led by the head of the delegation, Cristina Probst-Lopez.
Ternava-Sheremeti said that Kosovo has made significant progress in the field of migration in recent years, consolidating the legal and strategic framework, improving institutional capacities and building advanced systems for migration management and analysis.
She said that Kosovo is gradually becoming a destination country for foreign workers and said that this requires a new approach, including the protection of their rights.
“Today, I can say with great certainty that migration in Kosovo is changing. From a country mainly of origin, we are gradually transforming into a destination country for foreign workers. This change certainly requires a new, coordinated, data-based approach focused on the entire migration cycle, from the labor mobility agreement to the protection of migrants’ rights and the engagement of the diaspora,” said Ternava-Sheremeti.
During this dialogue, she noted that despite the achievements that have been made, the need for further institutional strengthening, interconnection of systems, and broader engagement of the entire society remains a challenge.
“For this reason, the Ministry of Interior, together with other relevant institutions, has initiated the process of drafting the new Migration Strategy 2026–2030, which will be drafted on current achievements and will be oriented towards a modern, comprehensive and developmental governance of migration,” she said, as announced by the Ministry in a statement.
“In this meeting, special emphasis was placed on the unsparing support of the Swiss government on this journey, and for this, the Kosovo delegation thanked the Swiss delegation for all the support.”
Within the framework of this dialogue, some of the challenges with the various movements of migrants that almost all EU countries are facing were discussed.
“While within the framework of the achievements of the Republic of Kosovo in this field, the implementation of activities arising from the Strategy and Action Plan for Migration 2021-2025, addressing the needs of unaccompanied migrant children and vulnerable groups, increasing accommodation capacities, etc. were highlighted.” /Express/
