Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has highlighted his government’s commitment to boosting the role of technology and innovation in the national economy, in an interview with French financial newspaper Les Échos.
Mitsotakis pointed to Greece’s progress in digital transformation since he first took office in 2019, emphasizing ongoing efforts to modernize public administration and support tech-driven growth.
Les Échos noted that a significant number of public services have already been digitized through the Gov.gr platform and underlined the prime minister’s ambition to make Greece a potential “start-up nation.”
Mitsotakis said that, in the long term, he envisions the technology and innovation sectors contributing up to 10% of Greece’s GDP.
Commenting on the future of artificial intelligence, Mitsotakis said Greece is well-positioned to play a role in shaping the AI landscape in Europe. “This technology offers us an opportunity to get ahead of the game: we are a medium-sized country, which makes it easier for us to centralize project management,” he told Les Échos.
“Our government understands and is committed to the technology sector. In any case, we want to be a leader in terms of AI innovation in public administration,” he added, stressing a particular interest in developing AI applications that simplify and improve public services.
He cited several key milestones, including the Gov.gr portal, which handled over 1.4 billion digital transactions in 2023, a figure he said continues to grow. Other innovations include the rollout of an AI-powered cadaster system and the recently launched Personal Citizen Number, introduced in early June to streamline citizens’ interactions with the state.
