The Kosovo Assembly will convene today for the 34th time, in an attempt to constitute the Assembly. The process has stalled in the election of the Speaker of Parliament. The winning party, the Vetëvendosje Movement, has proposed Albulena Haxhiu for this position, who is being considered a divisive figure by other parties.
Vetëvendosje is not giving up its name. In none of the votes for it, Haxhiu has received the votes he needs, 61.
Since April 15, when the constitutive session began, 29 of its extensions have failed. Even in today’s session, the 30th in a row, there is no sign of a way out of the impasse that has been created for two months.
The country’s President, Vjosa Osmani, has decided to take another step to seek a solution to the impasse the country has entered. She is expected to address the Constitutional Court with the aim of clarifying the legal possibilities for overcoming the current situation.
The President has so far held two consultative meetings with political party leaders, initially on May 15 and most recently on the issue of organizing local elections.
She has reiterated her willingness to hold separate meetings with any political leader interested in discussing the constitution of the Assembly.
It has now been over four months since Kosovo held parliamentary elections, in which Vetëvendosje emerged as the first party, followed by PDK, LDK, and AAK-NISMA.
