Spain has long been a popular holiday destination for travellers, whether it’s for those seeking a laid-back week in the sun on one of the fun-loving islands, a culture-filled few days in one of the magnificent mainland cities or a food-filled break in one of the renowned, Michelin-heavy destinations. And the great thing about this country and its variety of destinations is that it is suitable for a visit year round, though there are times when certain destinations will be better suited to different weather.

    The shoulder season in Spain – around the months of May and September – offer the perfect opportunity to see some of the country’s best sights without being overwhelmed by the burning sun and rise in temperature, but is still warm enough to wander at ease and enjoy better weather than you’ll find on UK soil.  For some inspiration on the Spanish cities with the best weather during shoulder season, look no further.     One of the best places to visit during the shoulder season has to be Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region. With its long and varied history, wonderful Gaudi architecture around every corner, art hubs galore and food that will wow, this is definitely one for the list. Fancy a beach-inspired holiday? Setting off on a cruise? Want to visit FC Barcelona’s impressive stadium? Or perhaps a tour of the cultural highlights is how you wish to spend your time, whatever you want, Barcelona has it. Get ready to be so impressed by the likes of La Sagrada Familia and the thriving food scene that you’ll be planning your next trip before you’ve even left the city.

    Spain’s capital city is a thriving place and its many fantastic features are best explored on foot, so that you don’t miss out on an inch of what’s in store for you here. Shoulder season provides the ideal time to visit so that you enjoy balmy weather, but without the crowds, perfect for discovering some of the finest examples of European art within its renowned galleries. Along the way you’ll spot the city’s iconic Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture as you stroll the elegant boulevards on your way to the likes of the Prado Museum. This city is also well-known for its lively nightlife scene, so get ready for nights full of fun when you visit Madrid.

    Another coastal gem and Spain’s third largest city, Valencia is also known for its distinctive architecture with its Old City (Ciutat Vella) filled with historic landmarks contrasting with the likes of the modern complex of the City of Arts and Sciences, which was designed by Santiago Calatrava. Beach lovers will be pleased with the long stretch of sands here, and the nightlife, food and relaxed atmosphere make for a welcoming place to spend time before or after the summer crowds have hit. The home of paella, fans of this one pot rice meal will be able to try many variations across the city for a true taste of the region’s signature dish.

    Long renowned for its world-class food scene, Donostia-San Sebastian, or San Sebastian as it is more commonly known, is the proud holder of the most Michelin stars per square metre in all of Europe. Its Pintxos bars showcase small plates of local delicacies alongside wines from the locale to wash them down with. Between Michelin-filled mealtimes, visitors can head to one of the beautiful beaches in this Basque region such as La Concha, Zurriola and Ondarreta to surf, swim or simply relax.
