Cumberland Council is urging communities to join in commemorating Srebrenica National Memorial Day.

The day, marked on July 11, honours the victims of the 1995 genocide in Bosnia.

The 2025 theme, ‘Remember Yesterday, Act Today,’ calls for both remembrance and ‘proactive action to safeguard against intolerance and hatred’.

Councillor Elaine Lynch, executive member for lifelong learning and development at Cumberland Council, said: “It’s very important that we learn from the past to create a better future.

“Srebrenica Memorial Day is a time for us all to remember the millions of people killed under regimes of hatred or who have suffered atrocities.

“It is also a time to recognise that there are still people today who are persecuted because of their sex, race, gender and religious beliefs.”

The council will light up buildings in green, and a pop-up display about Srebrenica Memorial Day will be on show at Whitehaven Library from July 7 to July 11.

Assemblies will also be held in schools across the region.
