(EurActiv) — Spain’s Economy Minister Carlos Cuerpo has officially entered the race to chair the group of 20 eurozone finance ministers.
“I’m stepping forward to inject fresh momentum into a forum that must be central to Europe’s political agenda,” Cuerpo announced on X, pledging deeper integration, and progress on growth, competitiveness, and social welfare.
The Eurogroup, while informal in structure, steers the economic direction of the currency bloc by coordinating fiscal policy, overseeing eurozone governance, and responding to financial crises.
The vote to select the new president is scheduled for the next Eurogroup’s meeting in Brussels on 7–8 July.To secure the role, a candidate must win majority support among the 20 eurozone finance ministers. The position, currently held by Ireland’s Paschal Donohoe, comes with a 2.5-year mandate and wields significant influence over EU economic policy debates.
Cuerpo, a career economist with a PhD and previous experience at the Commission and Spain’s fiscal watchdog AIReF, was appointed the country’s economy minister in December 2023.
