Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has officially added India to its List of Qualifications Exempt from Assessment (LQEA), effective 23 June 2025.
This landmark decision removes the long-standing requirement for most Indian degree-holders to undergo the time-consuming and expensive International Qualification Assessment (IQA), simplifying the visa and migration process for thousands of professionals and international students.
A major bottleneck removed
The IQA, previously required to validate foreign degrees against New Zealand’s education standards, was often viewed as a bureaucratic hurdle. With India’s inclusion in the LQEA, degree-holders from recognised Indian institutions can now bypass this step entirely. They join applicants from countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Singapore, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Sweden, and Switzerland in benefiting from this streamlined process.
In parallel, INZ is also refining existing qualification exemptions for countries like Australia, the US, the UK, Japan, Malaysia, and South Africa, enhancing fairness and clarity across its skilled migration policies.
Fast-tracked routes to residency and employment
This exemption is more than just a regulatory update–it’s a strategic move to bolster New Zealand’s skilled workforce. Indian nationals can now directly apply under priority immigration schemes such as the Skilled Migrant Category, Green List occupations, and Accredited Employer Work Visa streams.
These pathways offer accelerated access to New Zealand’s labour market and even residency–critical incentives in a fiercely competitive global talent market. For Indian graduates, especially in high-demand fields like STEM, IT, and business, the update significantly enhances New Zealand’s appeal.
India: A key education and migration partner
India has long been a major contributor to New Zealand’s international education sector, with over 22,000 Indian students enrolling in recent years. INZ’s policy shift is the latest in a series of measures aimed at deepening Indo-Kiwi ties:
New Zealand Excellence Awards 2025: With NZ$260,000 in funding, this programme offers up to NZ$20,000 per student for undergraduate and postgraduate study.
Generous Post-Study Work Rights: Graduates can stay and work in New Zealand for up to three years, opening a viable pathway to permanent residency.
Simplified, Affordable Visa Processes: Ongoing reforms have made New Zealand an increasingly attractive option for skilled Indian applicants.
A new contender in the global talent race
As countries like Australia, Canada, and the UK tighten or recalibrate their immigration rules, New Zealand’s latest move could tip the scales. Experts believe the LQEA update signals more than just administrative streamlining–it reflects a strategic understanding of global talent dynamics.
“In today’s world, the competition isn’t just for investment or trade–it’s for people,” said one immigration analyst. “By cutting red tape and building trust, New Zealand is sending a powerful message to Indian talent.”
Warm welcome
For Indian students and professionals considering their next move, the message is unambiguous: Bring your degree, your skills, and your ambition–New Zealand is ready.
As reported by The Times of India, this pivotal reform may mark the beginning of a deeper Indo-Kiwi partnership rooted in education, innovation, and opportunity.
