A working crew in Idaho Falls just completed a major achievement.
Yesterday, the Idaho Cleanup Project crews successfully transferred about 40 spent nuclear fuel baskets into safer, long term storage vaults.
The baskets contain spent nuclear fuel from the Idaho National Laboratory site.
The office of environmental management initiated the transfer in 2021, after routine monitoring revealed elevated hydrogen levels in the first vault.
This raised concerns about potential corrosion to the fuel baskets.
The baskets will remain in the second vault until it is packaged and shipped from Idaho for disposal.
