In Kosovo, yet another
attempt—the 43rd—to elect the president of the new parliament
formed after the February 9 election failed today. The standoff
between government and opposition continues, with the chamber
once again rejecting the majority party Vetëvendosje
(Self-Determination, nationalist left) proposal for a secret
ballot.
The proposal followed six consecutive defeats for the
government’s candidate, Albulena Haxhiu, who has not reached the
61-vote threshold required for election. Prime Minister and
Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti has so far refused calls to
nominate another candidate.
On June 26, Kosovo’s Constitutional Court intervened in the
deadlock, which had been ongoing since April 15, when the new
parliament held its inaugural session, setting a 30-day deadline
to elect the Assembly president.
A meeting that President Vjosa Osmani recently held with
party leaders to broker an agreement appears to have produced no
concrete results. Another attempt to elect the parliamentary
president is scheduled for July 9. Until the new parliament is
fully constituted, a new government cannot be formed, and fresh
elections cannot be ruled out.
