A 25-year-old Nepalese man who died after getting into difficulties while swimming early on Tuesday morning has been named as Robert Neupane.

The young man was the seventh person to die in a drowning incident at sea so far this year.

Police said he had been swimming with some friends at Exiles in Sliema at 1am. He was pulled to shore and rushed to Mater Dei Hospital, but died a short while later.

In a Facebook post the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) said the 25-year-old was from Nawalparasi District and moved to Malta at the end of 2023.

He was working as a food courier.

The NRNA said it is organising a fundraiser to help repatriate the body to Nepal.

He was the second person to die in separate swimming incidents in 24 hours.

At around 7.15am on Tuesday, a 67-year-old from Munxar was found unconscious in the sea at Xlendi Bay in Gozo.

The man, who has not yet been named, was brought to shore by people in the area and given first aid. However, he was certified dead some time later.

Police are investigating both incidents, which are also the subject of magisterial inquiries.

The first person to die at sea this year was a 76-year-old Irish tourist, who died in April off St Julian’s at Xatt is-Sajjieda, just off the Cavalieri Hotel. He was assisted on shore but died shortly afterwards.

Later that the same month, the body of a 71-year-old fisherman was found off the coast of Comino, hours after he was reported missing. His body was discovered at around 2pm on Tuesday following an Armed Forces of Malta search.

In June, Gozitan firefighter Emanuel Curmi died after facing difficulties while swimming in Żebbuġ. He was taken to the hospital but was certified dead shortly afterwards.

Last week, a 55-year-old man died after drowning at Għadira Bay. The man, a resident of Mellieħa, was brought out of the water after the alarm was raised at 6.30pm.

Dione Galdes, an experienced diving instructor, died on July 1 after experiencing difficulties during a dive in Ċirkewwa three days prior.
