Poisonous fish stings reported at Sjøsanden Beach in Mandal
Several beachgoers have been stung by the poisonous lesser weever at Sjøsanden in Mandal, according to a press release from Lindesnes Municipality.
“If you step on a lesser weever, the venom causes intense pain,” the municipality warned.
“The poison is neutralised at 40°C, so the recommended treatment is to immerse the sting site in water as hot as you can tolerate without causing burns.”
The lesser weever, which typically inhabits southern European waters, can bury itself in sand in shallow areas, especially at low tide.
It was first observed in Mandal in 2021.
