One of the early winners from Tuesday’s Pennsylvania Energy and Innovation Summit is Snyder County.

Capital Power announced that it has purchased the Hummel Station in Shamokin Dam, a major natural gas power facility, for $1.3 billion and committed $3 billion over the next 10 years for facility operations.

The Hummel Station will employ 30 full-time staff members to operate the facility and, seeking to expand the facility and create new partnerships with data-centered technology companies, could create new construction and operating jobs amidst increased demand for natural gas production in the state.

“Our entry into Pennsylvania has opened an incredible opportunity for Capital Power to support grid reliability and the local workforce,” the company said in a press release. “With a planned investment of over $3 billion in the first 10 years of our facility’s operations, inclusive of $2 billion of natural gas purchased in the state, we are committed to supporting a resilient future in the state through enhanced grid reliability, new upstream investments, and improved U.S. energy security.”

The acquisition of the 1,124 megawatt plant allows Capital Power to become the fifth largest natural gas independent power producer in North America.

“I’m thrilled to welcome this transformative investment in our great Commonwealth,” said Pennsylvania Sen. Dave McCormick. “This Energy and Innovation Summit is a powerful testament to Pennsylvania’s readiness and ability to lead – to generate thousands of good-paying jobs, to unleash our incredible energy resources, and to power the next AI and economic revolution, further strengthening America’s resilience and independence. I’m deeply grateful to Capital Power for their tremendous commitment to Pennsylvania’s future.”
