North Macedonia lost 11.4 percent of its population compared to 2011, the most in Europe after Albania and Bulgaria, Eurostat data shows. Macedonia is followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia.
Albania’s population decreased by 18 percent at the end of 2024, compared to the number in 2011. In the periods in question, when the population censuses were carried out, the country’s population decreased by more than 500 thousand inhabitants, euronews.al reported.
According to the European statistics agency, Eurostat, this percentage decline is the highest in Europe, followed by Bulgaria, which lost 12.3 percent of its population over the last decade, and Macedonia with 11.4 percent.
In the region, almost all countries have been affected by a wave of emigration, and one country that has managed to keep its population almost unchanged is Montenegro, which recorded an increase of 0.6 percent.
Western European countries have managed to increase their populations as a result of aggressive immigration policies as a solution to overcome demographic problems stemming from aging populations and falling birth rates. Meanwhile, the eurozone has grown its population by 3.2 percent since 2011.
