A pedestrian bridge has collapsed onto a truck in the Austrian city of Linz.
The police said two people had to be freed from the wreckage of the vehicle following the accident on Wednesday. The rescue operation took several hours, and both occupants of the truck suffered serious injuries, a police spokesman told the Austrian news agency APA.
The local authorities say the truck with a crane trailer crashed into the bridge, which then collapsed directly above the cab of the vehicle.
The fire brigade responded with a large contingent of technical equipment including cranes. The Oberösterreichische Nachrichten regional newspaper reported that, fortunately, no one was on the bridge at the time of the collision.
The truck driver had apparently tried to drive into an underground car park. The fire brigade estimate the collapsed section of the bridge weighed between 30 and 40 metric tons, the newspaper reported.
