Greek national team head coach Vassilis Spanoulis is already facing significant roster challenges ahead of this summer’s EuroBasket, with several key players pulling out of the tournament.

The biggest blow came with the withdrawal of Georgios Papagiannis, newly-signed center for Anadolu Efes.

Interestingly, Papagiannis played under Spanoulis last season at AS Monaco, but their collaboration ended on a sour note as the big man was largely sidelined after Spanoulis took over. While the reasons for his EuroBasket absence remain officially unclear, speculation has grown that their past working relationship may have played a role.

Another major absence will be Nikos Rogkavopoulos, who is coming off a career-best season and was expected to play a vital role for Greece this summer.

It was already known that Nick Calathes and Thomas Walkup would not be available. In Walkup’s absence, Tyler Dorsey, his Olympiacos teammate, will fill the role of the team’s naturalized player.
