Bildt: Political crisis has damaged the credibility of the Kosovo state

Carl Bildt

The inability to move forward has damaged Kosovo’s credibility, said former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, while commenting on the delay in forming new institutions.

“Will Kosovo ever have a new government? The inability to move forward has damaged the country’s credibility. And that’s bad for everyone.”, he wrote in X.

Kosovo has entered a political crisis due to the lack of formation of new institutions. The country held general elections on February 9 but has stalled on the constitution of the Assembly.

The Vetëvendosje Movement – the party that won the most votes in the elections, has nominated Albulena Haxhiu for Speaker of the Parliament, but the same party has failed to obtain the necessary 61 votes in an open vote six times in a row.

Parties that were previously in opposition oppose Haxhiu’s name for this position, considering him an unacceptable figure.

After the failures in the open vote, the Vetëvendosje Movement – in coalition with Guxo and Alternativa, have requested that the vote for the Speaker of the Assembly be held in secret. This has not been accepted by the other parliamentary parties.

On Monday, July 21, the 50th attempt to constitute the Assembly was made, while the end of the Constitutional Court’s term is approaching, which has ordered that the ninth legislature be formed by July 26.

However, the Constitutional Court has not indicated whether there will be consequences if such a thing does not happen.
