One person has died and another taken to hospital with burns following a house fire in New Plymouth overnight.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand sent three trucks and two support teams to the house in Westown shortly after 11pm.

When crews arrived, the house was ablaze and there were reports of people still inside.

A spokesperson said one person taken to hospital with burns, and confirmed another person had died.

The fire which began in the bedroom has since been extinguished, and fire crews have left the scene.

Police were also at the scene.

A fire investigator will return this morning to determine the cause of the blaze.
