Serbia ranks 34th among countries with the most powerful passports in the world, with visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 138 destinations out of a total of 227.

This is according to the latest data from the Henley Passport Index, where, out of 99 ranked countries, Singapore remains at the top.

The semi-annual ranking, published on Tuesday, confirms Serbia’s position on the index list from January this year.

Compared to the previous year, Serbia’s passport rose three places in January, from 37th to 34th, which marks its highest position since passport rankings began in 2006. This position has now been reconfirmed in the new list.

According to the same index, Bosnia and Herzegovina holds 42nd place, North Macedonia is 38th, and Montenegro is in 40th place, while Croatia and Slovenia share ninth position.

Singaporean citizens continue to hold the world’s most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 193 out of 227 destinations.

Japan and South Korea follow in second place with access to 190 destinations, while third place is shared by seven European Union member states – Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain – each with 189 destinations.

The United Kingdom and the United States, which once held the top spot in the global passport rankings (the UK in 2015 and the US in 2014), have both fallen: the UK is now in sixth place, and the US in tenth.

A British passport allows access to 186 countries, while an American passport grants entry to 182 destinations.

At the bottom of the list is Afghanistan, in 99th place, whose citizens can travel visa-free to just 25 destinations.

Next are Syria in 98th place with 27 destinations, and Iraq in 97th with access to 30 countries.

The Henley Passport Index is published by the consultancy Henley & Partners, which specialises in advising on citizenship and residence rights.

The ranking is compiled twice a year, in January and July, using exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), tracking the number of destinations passport holders can visit without a prior visa.
