Kosovo bans import of pigs and their products from Croatia

Following the reporting in the veterinary disease notification systems ADIS and WOAH, confirming the presence of African Swine Fever in the Osjecko Baranjska, Vukovarsko Srijemska region of Croatia, the Food and Veterinary Agency, in accordance with the Veterinary Law, from today, 23.07.2025, imposes the measure of temporary ban on the import of live animals of the pig type, products, by-products and pig genetic material.

This measure, according to the AUV, is taken with the aim of preventing the spread of the disease in our country.

“Border authorities operating within the framework of Integrated Border Management (Kosovo Police, Kosovo Customs and AUV). Will raise the level of control measures at all border points. To prevent the entry into the territory of the Republic of Kosovo, any type of goods that fall into the category of prohibited products. Currently we do not have any suspected cases on farms, we are continuously monitoring the situations of disease notification and the course of spread. All veterinary inspectors of AUV and private veterinary practices are active in the field. To prevent outbreaks and the spread of diseases. Currently, several diseases are active in the region. Thanks to the professional work of AUV, Kosovo has the situation under control so far. We do not have any suspected cases,” the AUV statement says.

It is further stated that African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease and its very name indicates that this disease occurs only in domestic pigs and wild boars, while other types of animals are not affected.

“The spread of this disease can be very large, so the transmission of this disease occurs from animal to animal, contact with various equipment, food and the movement of people from infected farms to females not affected by this disease. MAD is a contagious viral disease that causes hemorrhagic fever in domestic pigs and wild boars. It is accompanied by high lethality up to 100%. This disease is of an economic nature, it is not transmitted to humans,” the announcement states.
