It’s been eight months since Liam Payne‘s tragic death and fans are now getting a look at some of his final moments in the public eye on Building the Band.
The late One Direction musician served as a judge on the new Netflix series, which was filmed just a few months before Payne’s passing. Now that it’s airing, viewers are getting emotional witnessing how happy Payne was to be a part of the series.
While fans have gotten to see Payne interact with competitors on his episode of the show, Netflix just shared a new behind-the-scenes clip of the musician directly interacting with fans in the audience.
In the video, the crowd can be seen getting excited as One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” starts playing in the studio. As the audience begins to dance and sing along, Payne decides to join in — even approaching a fan with a microphone to harmonize.
“That was so fun,” Payne can be heard saying at the end of the song.
Many fans are now making the heartbreaking realization that the footage most likely marks Payne’s final One Direction performance — and their reactions are so emotional.
“last time we will ever hear him sing one direction 😭💗,” one commenter wrote on TikTok, with another replying, “Did you have to stab me through the heart like that?”
Another fan chimed in to say, “he looked so happy honestly it warms my heart to know he felt loved while filming this” while a heartbroken fan added, “He should still be here, life is cruel.”
The release of the footage comes just before the 15th anniversary of the formation of One Direction.
