Turkey reaches deals to buy dozens of Eurofighter Typhoon jets
Turkey reaches deals with UK and Germany to buy dozens of Eurofighter Typhoon jets

On Jul. 23, 2025 deals regarding the acquisition of dozens of Eurofighter Typhoon jets were reached between Turkey and NATO allies Britain and Germany, Reuters reports.

London signed a preliminary deal allowing Ankara to operate the jets while Berlin approved delivery of 40 of them to Turkey. The country has relied on both foreign purchases and its own defence industry projects, including domestic jets, to ramp up deterrence.

Ankara is also in talks with Washington to buy 40 F-16s, beyond the Eurofighters.

Turkey was prompted to push for rapid armament in order to counter any potential threats after Israel’s attacks on regional countries, including its 12-day conflict with Ankara’s neighbour Iran and more recent strikes on another neighbour Syria.

The Eurofighter Typhoon is built by a consortium of Germany, Britain, Italy and Spain, represented by Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo. Turkey has been in talks since 2023 to purchase 40 Typhoons.

Speaking at a signing ceremony with British Defence Secretary John Healey in Istanbul, Defence Minister Yasar Guler said the deal brought Turkey “one step closer to a fully comprehensive agreement” on the jets, adding it would also strengthen NATO and Turkey’s aerial capabilities.

One step closer to a fully comprehensive agreement

“We welcome this positive step toward our country joining the Eurofighter Typhoon club, and want to reiterate our mutual ambition to complete the necessary arrangements as soon as possible,” Defence Minister Yasar Guler said while speaking at a signing ceremony with British Defence Secretary John Healey in Istanbul.

He added that the deal brought Turkey “one step closer to a fully comprehensive agreement” on the jets, a deal that it would also strengthen NATO and Turkey’s aerial capabilities.

Guler also explained that the composition of the planned acquisition was for 40 jets but that different options were being considered.

The German government – initially opposed to the sale – has cleared the way for the delivery, a government spokesperson said.

Being the first export order secured by Britain for the Typhoon since 2017, the agreement would give a new lease of life to the final assembly line at BAE’s factory in northern England.

The multi-billion dollar agreement with Turkey would “sustain and protect 20,000 UK jobs for future years to come,” Prime Minister Keir Starmer said.

    A benchmarking fighter aircraft

The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard-delta wing, multirole fighter, which is manufactured by a consortium of Airbus, BAE Systems and Leonardo.

The aircraft delivers an enviable level of flexibility and efficiency, while possessing both adequate weapon availability and sufficient processing power to simultaneously support missile in-flight updates and bomb in-flight targeting. It is a true swing-role combat aircraft.

Combining a proven, agile airframe built from stealth materials with the latest sensors, control and weapons systems delivers optimum combat capability – both beyond visual range and in close combat.

The performance specifications of the Eurofighter Typhoon make it a benchmarking fighter aircraft, in several roles. Extremely powerful, efficient engines, paired with a low gross weight give it an extraordinary thrust-to-weight ratio. The result is an aircraft that regularly outclasses competitors when it comes to performance evaluations.
