During May, two American congresswomen visited Kosovo and Serbia.

On May 30 in Pristina, Republican Claudia Tenney and Democrat Chrissy Houlahan were received by the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani.

After their tour of the two Balkan countries, which have strained relations after Serbia refuses to recognize Kosovo’s independence, the congresswomen sent a strong letter to the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump.

Tenney and Houlahan say that after visits to Pristina and Belgrade, they believe that Trump and his administration have a unique historic opportunity to make lasting peace between Kosovo and Serbia, since according to them, they are two strategically important countries in the Western Balkans.

The congresswomen say they urge the White House chief of staff to use his influence, which they call significant in the region, to help create a normalization agreement between Serbia and Kosovo, which would, as they say, help stability in the region, perhaps even by visiting the two countries on a trip with, as they say, accompanying negotiations.

Tenney and Houlahan told Trump that he knows that the Western Balkans is a critical region in the world, and that instability in this part is often a precursor to global instability and major conflicts.

Members of Congress say that both Kosovo and Serbia are strong allies of the United States that cooperate with the military and intelligence agencies. But the tense relationship between the two Balkan republics, according to the two congresswomen, has created a destabilizing effect throughout the region.

They told the American president that a potential peace deal with mutual recognition between Serbia and Kosovo could be a catalyst for creating a more stable and peaceful Western Balkans.

In the letter, the pair from Congress tell the American president that his popularity and appreciation in Kosovo and Serbia is extremely high, even among the highest in Europe.

In talks that Tenney and Houlahan had with government officials in both Pristina and Belgrade, they say their hosts told them of their goal of closer relations with the US and strong support for the Trump administration.

This is about appreciation for the clear focus that Trump had in his first administration, when he made Richard Grenell, special envoy for Kosovo-Serbia peace negotiations.

The famous agreement of September 4, 2020, at the White House, is definitely mentioned.

The congresswomen say they believe these factors make Trump uniquely suited to lead negotiations for a more comprehensive Kosovo-Serbia accord that could lead to normalization and mutual recognition.

They conclude the letter by telling the most powerful man in the world that with his influence, a lasting peace agreement and recognition between the two Balkan countries is entirely achievable.

Thanking him for his time and attention to this issue, which the ladies consider important, they say they are looking forward to working on this important initiative.

The letter was also forwarded to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as Ambassador Richard Grenell, who is the presidential envoy for special missions. /Klan Kosova
