Dreaming of dramatic cliffs and crystal-clear water like the kind you’d find in Norway’s iconic fjords? Unfortunately, it’s not always possible to hop across the Atlantic to bask in that kind of natural beauty—but the good news is you don’t have to.

Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island in Maine, offers a coastal landscape that’s surprisingly reminiscent of Norway’s fjord region. Sure, the northeastern destination may lack the grandeur of actual fjords—and the romance of international travel—but in many ways, it scratches the same itch.

Exploring An (Almost) Fjord

When I visited Western Norway, I was instantly captivated by the iconic fjords. These long, narrow inlets are carved by glaciers, and they’re flanked by towering cliffs on either side. Acadia National Park doesn’t have a true fjord, but many consider Somes Sound to be the closest thing on the East Coast.

Technically, Somes Sound is a fjard—a glacially carved inlet that’s shallower and has more gently sloping sides. It stretches about five miles, and it’s surrounded by forested hills and granite ridges. The appearance of Somes Sound gives it a distinctly Nordic feel.

Where Cliffs Meet the Sea

Norway is known for its wild contrast between steep cliffs and blue water. Acadia National Park has similar elements, albeit in a more compact and accessible form.

One striking example is Thunder Hole, a natural inlet where ocean waves crash into a narrow chamber, creating a booming sound that resembles a storm. With its towering granite cliffs, Thunder Hole evokes the rugged character of the Scandinavian coastline.

Mountainous Views

Both Norway and Maine also boast large mountains. Cadillac Mountain, located in Acadia National Park, is the highest point along the U.S. Atlantic coastline, standing at 1,530 feet. From October 7 to March 6, its summit is the first place in the continental United States to see the sunrise. You can reach the top by driving the scenic Cadillac Summit Road or by hiking one of several trails.

For a similar (though significantly grander) experience in Norway, you can drive the road to Dalsnibba. This mountain viewpoint has an elevation of 4,842 feet. From the top, you’ll get sweeping views of Geirangerfjord and the surrounding landscape.

Pristine Bodies of Water

Acadia National Park is on the ocean, but it also has beautiful lakes and ponds. My favorite is Jordan Pond because of the mountain scenery surrounding it, plus the 3.3-mile hiking trail that lets you circumnavigate it. Visitors can kayak or canoe in Jordan Pond, and if they’re looking for a treat, they can order tea and popovers at the Jordan Pond House. Other scenic bodies of water in Acadia include Eagle Lake, Bubble Pond, and Echo Lake.

How does this compare to Norway? Although the Scandinavian country is known for its fjords, it also houses many picturesque lakes. These include Hornindalsvatnet (the deepest lake in Europe), Gjendevatnet, Djupvatnet, Oppstrynsvatn, and countless others.

Opportunities for Hiking

Both Norway and Maine attract outdoor adventurers because of their hiking opportunities. In Acadia National Park, those looking for a challenge attempt the Beehive Loop Trail. It’s only 1.5 miles long, but it takes hikers over iron rungs, ladders, and steep ascents on the side of a mountain. Other popular hiking trails in Acadia National Park include the Gorham Mountain Loop, Ocean Path Trail, Jordan Pond Path, and Cadillac North Ridge Trail.

The hiking trails in Norway are seemingly endless, numbering into the thousands. Many of these trails are challenging, with steep elevation and paths that stretch for miles, such as Trolltunga and Reinebringen. More moderate options include Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) and the Briksdal Glacier hike.

Whether you’re craving the solitude of nature or breathtaking coastal scenery, Acadia National Park delivers. It’s one of those rare places where the landscape is powerful enough to make you feel small—in the best possible way. It almost satisfies the itch to visit the fjords of Norway, if international travel isn’t in the cards this year.
