Bosnia and Herzegovina has lost more than 620,000 residents since the last population census in 2013, a result of mass emigration and a declining natural birth rate in a country grappling with deep political and economic challenges, it was announced on Tuesday in Sarajevo.
The proceedings volume Demographic Changes in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 2013 to 2024 was presented by the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, highlighting in particular the alarming trend of mass emigration, especially among young people, reports HINA.
More than half of people of Bosnian origin now live abroad. Political instability, a sense of insecurity, and economic uncertainty are further fueling the desire to leave, it was stated at the launch of the volume.
According to the report, the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina decreased by 626,903 people between 2013 and 2023. Based on analyses by the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country’s population in 2023 was 2,904,256, compared to 3,531,159 in 2013.
