PALEMBANG – Minister of Environment (LH) Hanif Faisol Nurofiq asked law enforcement officers (APH) in South Sumatra (Sumsel) to take firm action against land burners.

Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said law enforcement efforts must be made to parties who deliberately burn land during the dry season.

“This fire can happen if there is an attempt (intentionally) to burn it. We ask the Commander of the Regional Military Command II Sriwijaya and the South Sumatra Police Chief not to hesitate to take the necessary legal action,” he said as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, July 29.

He explained that South Sumatra has become an area that has so far been able to prevent forest and land fires from spreading even though there have been 43 hectares (ha) of burned land.

“South Sumatra is relatively stable thanks to the hard work of the local government and all parties in maintaining the high level of peat water,” he explained.

However, he asked for the handling of forest and land fires to continue massively as ordered by President Prabowo Subianto to prevent the hot crisis by preventing the fire from becoming a major disaster in Indonesia.

“The Ministry of Environment encourages concessions to be involved to immediately extinguish the fire if hotspots or fires are observed in the concession area,” he said.

Hanif said the handling of Karhutla was carried out in an integrated manner between the ground team commanded by the governor, regional police chief and commander together with a team from Manggala Agni and BPBD. Meanwhile, the air team will be led directly by the BNPB team and the Commander of Sri Mulyono Air Base, Herlambang Palembang.

“The equipment is getting more massive and every time you know there is equipment innovation in handling forest and land fires including 3 water bombing helicopters,” he said.
