The Foundation for Social Welfare Services (FSWS) hosted a national conference today to mark World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, focusing on strengthening protection for vulnerable groups in Malta.
The event forms part of the ‘New Beginnings: Empowering Against Trafficking’ project, co-funded by the EU’s Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), which supports victims of human trafficking through safe accommodation, legal aid, psychosocial support, and reintegration services.
Social Policy Minister Michael Falzon emphasised that trafficking disproportionately affects vulnerable individuals, including children, victims of domestic violence, migrants, people with mental health issues, and those facing extreme poverty.
“We are committed to supporting all victims, whether Maltese or foreign, and helping them rebuild their lives with dignity,” said Minister Falzon.
Minister for EU Funds Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi praised the strategic use of EU resources, calling New Beginnings “an investment in hope,” and thanked FSWS and its partners for their ongoing work.
Parliamentary Secretary for Reforms and Equality, Rebecca Buttigieg, highlighted the launch of a new public awareness campaign, “Human Trafficking Hides in Plain Sight,” urging citizens to report suspicious activities. “It’s our duty to act decisively against this crime,” she stated.
FSWS CEO Alfred Grixti noted the importance of early detection and training professionals to spot signs of trafficking, alongside raising public awareness on how traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals.
The public is urged to report any suspicions to the authorities via the 24/7 helpline 179. More information is available at www.fsws.gov.mt and on the New Beginnings Facebook page.
