Curious to know why Prison Break is leaving Netflix? The series focuses on an engineer, Michael Scofield, who enters the prison to free his brother from a falsely accused crime. After a year of returning to the streaming platform, the show is now expected to exit the platform.

Here is everything you need to know about the crime drama series’ departure from the global streaming platform.

Why is Prison Break leaving Netflix and when?

Prison Break is leaving Netflix on January 29, 2026, due to the expiry of the agreement with Disney.

The series was removed from Netflix libraries in January 2022. However, the producer, 20th Century Fox Television, now owned by Disney, decided to keep the streaming rights for most regions to Disney+ and Hulu. However, Prison Break surprisingly made a return to Netflix US. The show began streaming on Netflix again on July 29, 2024, following a licensing deal between Disney and Netflix.

This deal followed a content-sharing agreement between the two networks. Besides Prison Break, shows like Lost, This Is Us, and How I Met Your Mother were part of the deal. As a result, Prison Break’s five seasons, including the 2017 revival, were back on Netflix. This deal contributed to the viewership of the show, along with platform visibility.

However, the deal is now heading towards its expiry. Prison Break is scheduled to exit Netflix in the US at the end of January next year. This will bring to an end the 18-month license deal between Disney and Netflix. Moreover, this is not the first time any show or film has left any streaming platform due to the expiry of its license. In the past, many popular series were taken off Netflix following license expiry.

While Prison Break is slated to exit Netflix in the US, it can still be streamed on Hulu. The platform also offers a 30-day free trial for users before charging a subscription fee.
