Alec Luhn, a Wisconsin native and renowned journalist, has been found alive after disappearing during a solo hike in Norway’s Folgefonna National Park. Luhn, a 38-year-old acclaimed climate journalist and graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, was located near a glacier in an area with no cell service. His family said he was found with a broken femur.His mother, Sarah Marie Streed, shared the news with WISN 12 News, saying, “Six nights and six days on a cliff, unable to move. Crews spent days battling brutal weather conditions searching for him. “The conditions have been very challenging with difficult terrain, poor visibility, a lot of rain and high water levels,” said Norwegian Red Cross volunteer Stig Hope, who led their leadership team in the national park.During the search, Alec’s parents said his wife was able to access his laptop, which had some journal entries from the start of his solo trip. They said it helped crews narrow their search area. That paired with improving weather conditions Wednesday aided in what happened next. The Red Cross said around 11:30 a.m. in Norway, a rescue helicopter spotted Alec injured and waving to get their attention. According to Norwegian authorities, Luhn has been airlifted to a hospital in Bergen.”So far all they can see is a broken femur, nothing else. And he’ll go in the ICU. We’re on our way. His wife is flying from the UK. We’ll all be there tonight to see him,” Streed said. Alec’s parents, who live in Milwaukee, said their first order of business is hugging their son when they get to the hospital. “Thanks be to God! I mean, I can’t. I can’t believe it. We both can’t believe it. I mean, after so many days, so many nights, no news, a bad storm, you know, we were really sad. It was a nightmare,” Streed said. “We thought he was dead,” Alec’s dad added.
