Police are investigating a third bomb threat on Main Street Nantucket in less than a week, police say.Nantucket Police say that just before 10:30 p.m. on Saturday, the Nantucket Communications Center received a call from an individual reporting that they “intended to place an improvised explosive device” at 16 Main St., the same location as two previous bomb threats made earlier in the week.Nantucket police, along with the Massachusetts State Police and Nantucket Fire Department, responded to the scene. Members of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad were already stationed on the island for a separate event and were able to respond to the scene immediately.After a thorough search of the area, no explosive devices were located, and the scene was cleared a little over an hour after the initial call was made.”This was a false report, but we take every threat seriously. We appreciate the quick coordination between all involved agencies, and we thank the public for their patience and cooperation during the response,” the department said in a press release.The case remains under investigation by the Nantucket Police Department Detective Unit, Massachusetts State Police, and the FBI.The first incident occurred on Tuesday, August 5, just after 7 p.m., when the Nantucket Communications Center received a call reporting that an improvised explosive device was located in a vehicle near 16 Main St. That call prompted the evacuation of nearby businesses, streets and sidewalks while a thorough search was conducted.On Friday, August 8, Nantucket Police received two separate calls reporting possible improvised explosive devices in the area of 16 Main St. The first call came into the communications center just before 7:30 p.m. reporting a device was in a box in the area of 16 Main St. Once again, all businesses, sidewalks and streets were evacuated while Nantucket police, fire and members of the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad searched the area and did not locate or indicate any sign of an explosive device.Approximately four hours later, a second call was received at 11:13 p.m. reporting a bomb was located at the Ralph Lauren building located at 16 Main St. An additional search of the building and surrounding area was conducted by the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad, rendering the area safe just after 1 a.m.Anyone with information is urged to contact the police.
