Music and history. Burning war staff are remembered forever – one picture can transfer the climate of the era into our modernity and become an icon of culture. In the case of the German thrash metal band Sodom, this is the cover “Agent Orange” – graphic reinterpretation of an authentic photo from the Vietnam war – it became such a symbol. On the cover, created by Andreas Marschall, we see a on -board shooter on the AC -47 aircraft (“Puff The Magic Dragon”), captured on the basis of a photo of Lary Burrow from the Vietnam war: the interior of the hull, machine gun, amazing tension of the moment. The photo presents the Douglas AC -47 machine, used by American forces for ground targets in Vietnam – both Viet Cong and Civilian soldiers. On Marschall graphics, a background has been added – a jungle contaminated with an orange agent, whose vapors take the shape of a cachy – an incredibly strong, symbolic detail. The band itself with this image defines the idea of the album: brutal and anti -war. The title “Orange Agent” refers to the USA defolant used in Ranch Hand operations – from 1962 to 1971 the destruction of forests continued to reveal the hidden Viet Cong bases. The result was diseases among the population (cancer, innate defects) and soldiers. The album itself came out on June 1, 1989 by Steamhammer/SPV, recorded in March -April ’89 at the Musiclab Studios in Berlin. It was the last album with guitarist Frank Blackfire before his departure to the wizard. The lyrics are full of references to the Vietnam war – from “Orange Agent” to “Magic Dragon” (another mention of AC -47) after “Ausgebombt”. The album reached the 36th place on the German charts, sold over 100,000 copies in Germany – this is a breakthrough for the band. #Agentorange #sodom #vietnamwar #thrashmetal #albumcover #warphotography #AC47 #Puffthemagicdragon #andreasmarschall #tomangelripper #blackfire #war #historyinmetal #culturaralmory #metalart #defoliant #spvsteamhammer #Musicandhistory
