Protests against Poles in Croatia after two Polish men attack and kill a local

Today, 67-year-old Nikša Šodan is being laid to rest. He passed away following an assault by a group of Polish individuals during the early morning hours of August 4 this year. Two Poles have been arrested in connection with the attack and charged with manslaughter (causing death by negligence), a crime punishable by six months to five years in prison.

Villagers from Igrane are outragedaccusing the police of failing to respond to repeated calls about the violent behavior of the Polish individuals. However, the Split-Dalmatia County Police confirmed to Index that they received no such calls—until the arrest was made. Notably, the Poles’ house was vandalized with offensive graffiti the day before.

Diana says that over the last four yearsthe police have been called at least 70 times due to the Polish neighbors’ violent and harassing behavior toward locals and guests. In one recent incident, a guest called from her phone, reporting that the Poles had jumped over her balcony railing, insulted her, and thrown towels into the sea—including telling the police she felt unsafe.

Following system failures and the death of their neighbor, some residents now plan to apply for gun permits out of fear.
