Cases of insufficiently investigated torture, pressures on press freedom, and systematic violations in the Transnistrian region – these are just a few of the serious issues highlighted in the annual human rights report on the Republic of Moldova, published by the U.S. State Department and analyzed by Promo-LEX.
Although the report notes that there have been no major changes compared to the previous year, serious issues persist regarding human rights, particularly related to torture and inhumane treatment, as well as interference in freedom of expression. The report also highlights the fact that the authorities in Chisinau have made efforts to prevent abuses, but progress is limited in certain areas, reports IPN.
The report notes the existence of credible evidence regarding the use of torture and degrading treatment, particularly within the law enforcement and prison system. Investigations are rare and often superficial, and cases seldom reach court. Detention conditions, along with the lack of access to adequate medical services, continue to be an acute problem.
At the same time, although the legislation guarantees press freedom, the report shows that it is undermined by political and financial influences. The report mentions cases of harassment and intimidation of journalists, as well as organized disinformation, which directly undermines the democratic functioning of the state.
Regarding the situation on the left bank of the Dniester, the report describes it as “very serious”. The document highlights cases of political repression, arbitrary detention, and torture. The Promo-LEX Association, which collaborated on the documentation of the report, confirms its conclusions. The organization emphasizes that the de facto administration in Tiraspol continues to use torture as a method of intimidation and obtaining testimonies, without the perpetrators being held accountable.
