OROVILLE, Calif. — Butte College celebrated the grand opening of its new multi-million-dollar science building today, offering tours of the state-of-the-art facility, which includes a planetarium. The planetarium is one of several innovative learning spaces within the new building.
Superintendent and President Virginia Guleff emphasized the significance of the unveiling for the institution. “Today marks a new era for Butte College, this building represents a $73 million dollar investment into academic excellence, opportunity and student success,” she said.
Guleff expressed her desire to honor the staff’s efforts in creating the building, highlighting the importance of providing students with advanced educational opportunities. “Because this is a state-of-the-art science building with labs, with labs that are comparable with any four year or beyond. So we know that we will be preparing our students for careers in high tech industries and STEM,” Guleff said.
Despite the focus on STEM services, the building will serve a broad range of courses. “Students not just in STEM but also nursing, allied health and those taking general education courses now have access to a state-of-the-art learning environment supported with industry standard laboratory equipment,” said Kam Bull, Butte College’s Dean of S.T.E.M.
The general public will have to wait to explore the new planetarium, as staff are still finalizing the schedule for future demonstrations.
