A new long-distance night bus service is set to launch in Europe this autumn, offering an innovative and eco-friendly travel alternative. This new service, operated by Swiss transportation company Twiliner, aims to bridge the comfort gap often experienced during long journeys by providing passengers with the luxury of business-class-like seating on an overnight bus.
Starting operations in November 2025, the sleeper bus network will connect several of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations, with planned stops in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. This move provides environmentally-conscious travellers with an alternative to short-haul flights, promising a sustainable way to explore the continent while reducing carbon footprints. According to Twiliner, their buses emit 85% less CO2e than planes, making them as eco-friendly as taking a train.
The buses will be powered by HVO diesel, a renewable fuel made from waste fats and vegetable oils, further ensuring their sustainability. But the focus isn’t just on the environment — Twiliner also aims to elevate the comfort of long-distance travel, offering a level of luxury rarely seen on coaches.
Seats that Convert into Beds
Twiliner’s buses feature 21 seats that are designed to transform into beds at the push of a button, allowing passengers to rest comfortably during the journey. This feature will be a first for European buses and ensures that passengers can get a good night’s sleep while travelling. Eighteen of the seats are located on the upper deck, while three are situated on the lower deck. The seating layout has been modelled after business class seats typically found on aircraft, with plush pillows and blankets provided for added comfort.
Each seating area is equipped with individual electrical outlets, a small table, and a reading light. Complimentary internet access is also available for passengers, and there is a small storage compartment for personal items. These amenities ensure a convenient and enjoyable travel experience for those seeking a comfortable, restful journey across Europe.
On the lower deck, passengers will find a spacious bathroom and changing room, though showers will not be available. A snack bar on this level offers light refreshments to passengers throughout the trip.
Luggage and Special Items
Twiliner allows each passenger to bring one large suitcase, as long as it meets the specifications of the service: a maximum of 23kg in weight and 80 x 50 x 35cm in size. Additionally, passengers can bring one carry-on item, not exceeding 5kg and 50 x 30 x 20cm in size. For those with special travel needs, items such as bicycles, surfboards, and skiing equipment can be brought aboard, provided they are booked in advance.
Routes and Pricing
The service will initially launch with two key routes: Zurich to Amsterdam, which will include stops in Basel, Luxembourg, Brussels, and Rotterdam, and Zurich to Barcelona, with a stop in Girona. Buses will operate several times a week, with plans to increase frequency to daily departures in the near future.
Ticket prices for these overnight trips will begin at around €180 for a one-way journey. Twiliner aims to expand its network to 25 European cities by 2028, creating a continent-wide system of night bus services. The goal is to provide a seamless travel experience across Europe that complements existing night train routes.
Comfort and Family Travel Considerations
Twiliner’s night buses are designed with adult travellers in mind, and the service is not recommended for families with young children. Passengers under the age of five are not permitted to travel, while older children can board as long as they are accustomed to long-distance travel and understand the need for a quiet, sleep-friendly environment during the journey.
