The proportion of women in the population of the Republic of Moldova reached 52.8% in 2024, an increase from 52% in 2014. The ratio of men to women has decreased, now being 89 men to 100 women, compared to 92 in 2014. The data from the Population and Housing Census conducted last year, compared to the previous census, were presented today by the National Bureau of Statistics, reports IPN.

The data from 2024 shows that, up until the age of 20, there are more men than women. However, after this age, the number of men significantly decreases compared to women. The deputy head of the Census Directorate, Snejana Nașco, mentioned that this difference is explained by the lower life expectancy of men, which is currently about 9 years less than that of women.

The age structure of the population in groups of 10 years remains largely similar to that of 2014, however, significant changes are observed in two categories: the number of people between 20 and 29 years old has decreased by 7.5%, while the 60-69 age group has recorded an increase of 4.6%.

At the same time, the proportion of the population of working age has decreased by 9%, and the number of those who have exceeded this age has increased by 7.5%. According to BNS experts, the changes highlight a trend of workforce aging and an increasing pressure on the economically active segment.
