Mario Hezonja will have to wait before stepping back on the court for Real Madrid.
The 30-year-old forward picked up an injury while training with the Croatian national team and has been ruled out indefinitely, the Spanish club confirmed Monday.
According to the official statement:
“Following tests carried out on Mario Hezonja by Real Madrid‘s medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a muscular injury to the biceps femoris in his right thigh, which occurred during training with the Croatian national team. His progress will be monitored.”
Hezonja recently played in all four games of Croatia’s FIBA World Cup 2027 Pre-Qualifiers earlier this month, averaging 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. His strong play helped Croatia go undefeated (4-0) against Denmark and Norway, earning a spot in the next round of Qualifiers where they’ll face Germany, Israel, and Cyprus starting in late November.
Now shifting his focus back to club basketball, Hezonja will be aiming for the 2025-26 EuroLeague season as well as domestic competitions in Spain. Real Madrid, led by new head coach Sergio Scariolo, will open their EuroLeague campaign on September 30 with a high-profile matchup against Virtus Bologna.
Once cleared to return, the Dubrovnik native will begin his ninth EuroLeague season and fourth with Real Madrid. He already has 186 career EuroLeague games under his belt, along with an NBA stint from 2015 to 2020, where he played 335 games for the Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, and New York Knicks.
