PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WJAR) — A Warwick doctor has been fined by the Rhode Island Department of Health after operating on the wrong eye of a patient he was treating.

The incident happened on June 28, 2024 when health officials said Dr. Charles Calenda performed a laser procedure on a patient in which he pointed the laser at the wrong eye.

The patient had come to Dr. Calenda for treatment of bilateral posterior capsular opacities that developed following cataract surgery.

Following a series of appointments, the patient agreed to laser surgery on her left eye.

Even though health officials say her left eye was dilated, Dr. Calenda performed the laser procedure on her right eye.

As a result of the incident, Dr. Calenda was fined $1,100 and has to take a board-approved course within six months.
