LIMASSOL (Cyprus) – Simone Fontecchio became Italy’s single-game scoring champion in FIBA EuroBasket history after pouring in 39 points against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Italy’s NBA forward knocked down seven three-pointers in the 96-79 win to surpass Andrea Bargani, who tallied 36 points against Latvia at FIBA EuroBasket 2011.
Fontecchio’s massive outburst included 21 points in the first half. He also had 8 rebounds and 3 assists in the game.
The 29-year-old was limited to just 4 points in Italy’s opening night loss to Greece and then picked up 14 points in the second game before exploding in his third outing of the tournament.
“I really wasn’t worried about my performance. Of course I wasn’t happy but I knew it would come at some point so I wasn’t really stressed about it,” Fontecchio said about his first game struggles.

“I was mad a little bit but it’s part of the game, part of life. You cannot always score 40 points or 20 points every game. I am not a machine.”
Fontecchio missed his first 10 shots of the opening game and was just 1 of 11 in the loss to Greece. Against Bosnia and Herzegovina, he connected on 13 of 20 shots including 7 of 10 from long range to go down in the Italian history books.
