LIVINGSTON, Texas (KLTV) – An upcoming event aims to raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention while helping boost resources for those in need in Deep East Texas.
Dr. Shawna Munson, executive director of the Mental Health Advancement Foundation, says the upcoming Suicide Prevention Amazing Race is one of the ways the nonprofit is working to increase mental health services across the area.
The Suicide Prevention Amazing Race kicks off Sept. 27 in Livingston. It’s designed as a fun and challenging competition that encourages participants to work in teams while navigating various tasks and obstacles, according to Munson.
Teams will start at Pedigo Park, working to crack clues and uncover their next destinations — where they will then take part in creative challenges like art therapy or writing exercises that promote expression and understanding of mental health topics.
“All along the way they’re going to be learning about suicide prevention, about how to ask ‘are you OK?’” Munson said.
Local mental health organizations will also have booths to provide information and support services.
