Poland wants to participate in talks about safe skies in Ukraine but does not want it to happen at the detriment of its own security, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said after a meeting in Paris to discuss the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

After the meeting on Thursday, Tusk said to reporters that “I told our partners that Poland is very interested in having safe skies, but this must be related to security guarantees for Poland.”

Due to its geographical position and staunch support for Ukraine, Poland has seen repeated violations of its airspace since the war started in 2022. Poland reported several attempts to scramble its aerial monitoring systems.

The most serious of the violations happened months after the beginning of the war, when a stray Ukrainian missile struck a Polish village near the border, killing two people. The most recent occurred last Wednesday, when Polish authorities noted two drones entering the country. The drones were not shot down because they were deemed not to be a danger to the country. A similar incident happened in August when a drone coming from Russian ally Belarus crashed in a cornfield in eastern Poland.
