Disney+ has inked a content distribution deal with Spain’s Atresmedia to distribute streaming content to subscribers in the country.
Beginning this month, Disney+ subscribers in Spain will have access to a specially curated collection of Atresmedia titles, including more than 300 hours of Spanish-produced content annually, which will be updated regularly, in a dedicated Atresplayer streamer space on the Disney+ home page.
One of Atresmedia’s best known titles is Netflix’s “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”), which ranks as the No. 4 most-viewed foreign-language series on the streamer with more than 106 million views globally.
“This agreement reflects our commitment to supporting local television channels across Europe, including our recent agreement in the U.K. with ITVX,” Karl Holmes, GM of Disney+ for EMEA, said in a statement.
Recent Disney+ original series produced in Spain include “Ladrones: La tiara de Santa Agueda,” or the upcoming “La suerte: Una serie de coincidenciones,” which will premiere at the next San Sebastián International Film Festival.
“This pioneering and historic agreement … allows us to expand the reach of our productions, promoting Spanish talent and culture,” added Javier Bardají, CEO of Atresmedia.
In addition to “Money Heist,” Atresmedia content reaching international viewers includes “Gran Hotel,” “Velvet,” “The Time Between Stitches,” “Vis a Vis,” “Veneno,” “Alba,” and “Entre Tierras.”
“This alliance strengthens Atresmedia as a driving force and benchmark in our industry and confirms Atresplayer as a leading Spanish platform and local hero in our country, with a history of continuous growth,” Bardaji said.
Beginning Sept. 14, Disney+ is streaming the original Atresmedia series “Mar Fuera,” “La Voz,” and “Tu Cara Me suena,” in addition to Antenna 3 series such as “La Encrucijada” and “Sueños de liberta,” among others.
Disney+ had a reported 2.2 million subscribers in Spain through 2022.
